The LED Focus is the first of an exciting new range of torches from Kowalski. It is a totally different shape and does not rely exclusively on rechageable batteries. The LED Focus can work with normal dry cell batteries, but also comes with the option of using rechargeable batteries if required.
For about 8 years Kowalski have been testing various forms of LED lightsources but, until now, have found them unable to project a light equivalent to their basic 620 torches. Much experimentation and the production of countless prototypes, along with the almost legendary ability to design reflectors that concentrate the light where it is wanted, has resulted in an extremely powerful torch and also the facility to change the width of the beam to suit the type of diving you wish to do.
As with many other LED torches, the burntime of these is dramatically better than most other forms of lightsource. Typically LED's will produce a very bright light for a long time, but after a while the light will dim a little, but remain lit. When referring to the time the batteries should last we refer to the "Burntime" and the "Auxilliary Burntime". Although it may be a long time in Auxilliary mode, you will probably wish to take the dimming of the lamp as a signal that the batteries do need replacing or recharging.
It does very much depend upon the batteries used. The Burntime of the simple dry cell batteries is generally longer than the rechargeable cells. The Burntimes of the batteries supplied with the torches is shown in the Technical Specification; the burn times of batteries supplied by other manufacturers or to other specifications may vary substantially, but Kowalski believe that they have provided the optimum product.,
